La Roche-Posay dates back to 1928 when the company started to produce products formulated with the natural spring water of the La Roche-Posay commune in western France. The brand was founded by a dermatologist who wanted to help patients cure pathological skin conditions using the natural properties of the thermal spring water. The spring water had already been used for decades to treat skin conditions due to its natural concentration of selenium and the restorative benefits offered by the spring's antioxidants.

In 1975, La Roche-Posay Laboratoire Pharmaceutique was founded by René Levayer, and the company has only grown in popularity since.
